Huxley Lane of San Diego has been a participant in the U. S. Kids Golf World Championships since age 6, playing three straight years through 2024. Part of the appeal beyond the competition is meeting children from all over the world who are his fellow competitors.
“ It’ s such a wonderful site, just because of its inherent character,” says Coore, who marvels at the mixture of native elements and man-made remnants, some of which still remain from when The Pit Golf Links was open.“ That character was essentially created, not all of it is natural, but it has all been reclaimed by nature. This land is left over from all that mining from the 1930s. The spoil piles are here, and Mother Nature provided the trees, and it’ s all incredible. It’ s not too often you get that kind of combination, and it creates a site that is extraordinarily interesting for golf.”

32 PORTFOLIO MAGAZINE added the next nine shortly thereafter. Then, Donald Ross added his touches, drawing on his Scottish roots to add bunkers across fairways and around the greens. The result is a course, number 1, that’ s a classic not just due to its age, but because of its appeal.
Pinehurst was owned by the Tufts family until 1970, when it was sold to Malcom McLean. Eventually the resort was sold to Robert H. Dedman, Sr., founder of ClubCorp. When the Dedman family sold ClubCorp, they retained Pinehurst. For a property of its unique heritage, it is fortunate that there has always been a good stewardship of the resort and that its resources have grown and been enhanced over the years, a process that continues through today.
One of the highlights of the Pinehurst calendar is each year, the U. S. Kids Golf World Championships welcomes golfers ages 5-12 to championship courses in the Pinehurst area. These courses, this event, and the community of Pinehurst come together to produce the world ' s largest junior golf tournament, which provides a stage for golf’ s next generation of stars to shine. The schedule consists of a Parade of Nations, Parent-Child Tournament, Trackman Demo Days, three rounds of championship play, and the Closing Ceremony. Following the threeday championship, the Van Horn Cup— a one-day best ball tournament featuring the top 12-year-old boys and girls— is contested on Pinehurst No. 4.
