SEASONALITY In the growing months the grasses are highlighted by the horizontal slits in the Corten bands while in the winter the expression is focused on the horizontal slits themselves. Up-lighting at the railing attachment points illuminates the tree’s canopy in the summer and its skeleton in the winter. Below: A detailed view of the handrail clamped on to the band by a hand-hammered bracket. The battered metals texture connotes a process. 18 | The grating functions as an elevated surface on which to traverse over the grasses in the summer time, and as a high-grip surface in the winter. Parallel to the path of motion the grating is serrated for traction while the grating members running perpendicular to the direction of movement are smooth, allowing snow to be cleared towards the sides of the pathway where a gap between the guardrail and horizontal surface allows for snow to be cleared from the pathway. ?T The Corten bands unify the scheme as a vertically stratified park/infrastructure hybrid. The steel core of each band supports a planted surface composed of a steel tray for soil and a suspended grate as well as anchoring the Corten bands and steel handrails.
