The Arlington Police Department’s Walmart
Restorative Justice Initiative received three
prestigious awards in 2017. The International
Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) presented the
department with the Cisco Leadership in Community
Policing Award, the Laura and John Arnold
Foundation Leadership in Law Enforcement Award
and the Michael Shanahan Leadership in Public/
Private Cooperation Award. The initiative launched in
2015 to provide an alternative path to incarceration
for low-level theft offenders who were apprehended
by Walmart loss prevention associates. It has helped
reduce theft calls by 50 percent.

Gov. Greg Abbott also honored the Police
Department in 2017. He presented four officers
with the prestigious Star of Texas Award, which is
given to first responders who are seriously injured
or killed in the line of duty. Lieutenant Michael
