music you should have been there We pick a few shows to check out each issue. This time we saw the Allah-Lahs at the Star Theater. And now for some pictures and words about that. by cervante pope 36 Los Angeles invaded Portland earlier this month with psychedelic surf rock enthusiasts Allah-Las and the soft indie pop of Tashaki Miyaki, with Portland’s Daydream Machine prepping the audience for them. The Star Theater harbored both the mellowed attendees hazily marveling at the stage for Daydream Machine and Tashaki Miyaki and the frenzied fans faltering about for the Allah-Las. All three bands released new material this year, making for a night filled with oldies, newbies and goodies. Daydream Machine opened the night with songs off their breezy debut, Twin Idols. But their cover of “Dawn,” originally by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, transitioned swimmingly into Tashaki Miyaki’s ethereally chill set. Once the Allah-Las took the stage, a darkroom red hue glowed about the room, the crimson illumination forming interesting shadows on the faces of the audience. Mainly playing tracks from their latest release from earlier this year, Worship the Sun, the Allah-Las effortlessly exuded Southern California “cool” with their beachy, sun-drenched chic. Throwing back a couple tracks from their self-titled debut, the night ended with cheers, shouts and applause.
