The night was amazing and it transformed into a wondrous morning. I was broke and slightly hung-over, but I was euphoric.
I had gone into town not only to size the ring, but to thank the woman who had spent countless hours up and down Broad Street to help me find it. Tanya, my ‘ring-finding hound’ was an old school mate and a sucker for romantic endings. Her eyes welled with tears when I told her of my success. Swollen with joy, she for once, dubbed me a gentleman, – more than a few notches up from the names she usually called me.
In the store, all traffic had stopped to listen to recount. When I was done, an ‘old-girl’, possibly in her eighties, hugged and kissed me all over and then she wished aloud that she had been a few years younger –she would marry me herself. By the time I left, there wasn’t a dry eye in the store.
Then the gods came…
The sky tore open bathing everything in a penetrating, iridescent light. In the Tear, a menacing eye stretching across the heavens stared down at us in rage. When it blinked, reality tore asunder. The sound of the earth breaking was deafening. Much later, I would learn that one and a half billion people had died outright and seven billion more would have perished by the day’s end. Later still, I would discover that it was actually not an attack on our reality, but the desperate act of a race of extra-dimensional beings trying to save us from a threat so nefarious that it would take me ten thousand years to fully understand it and longer still to act against it.
