However the digital boom has spawned some new interest online. Pioneers like Seth Dolcy of the Comics Appreciation Team and Wade Alleyne of the Outsiders’ Underground keep the banners flying on Facebook. Even events such as AnimeKon, the region’s largest pop-culture convention (shameless self promotion) push the envelope by inviting esteemed members of the international pop-culture community to reinvigorate life to the industry. These avenues have shown that not only are the geeks still there, but they are now there in their thousands – all clamoring for a piece of their past and looking for a gleam of hope for the future.

Last week, Marvel Entertainment stated that they are going to do way with the physical copies of their literature and will opt for digital. This may be the final nail for the comic book store. I can’t see the future, but I do know that I am glad that I was able to experience comic book store life. The camaraderie. The smells. The excitement. It was all there.

Anyways, I hope you have enjoyed my rantings today. I certainly enjoyed recounting my past. I apologize if I have left anyone out. But if I have, thank you for your contributions to my favorite art form. I don’t get to purchase physical comics as much as I would like nowadays, but I still contribute with my digital buys and ask you to do the same.

Support your local (or international) comic book vendor. Be a part of history.- Omar Kennedy
