Pisciculture sounds death knell for Khajan fields
Parampai villagers boycott ZP polls in protest
W
Of the 775 voters listed for voting
at the booth only 225 exercised their
franchise. The remaining 400 villagers
from Caranjal in Parampai-Marcaim
decided to use vote boycott as a weapon
to raise their voice against a long pending grievance –inundation of khajan
fields with saline water by people with
vested interest. Parampai Booth electorate
constituting a sizeable chunk of the Veling-Priol zilla panchayat constituency has
further threatened to boycott the 2017 assembly elections if appropriate solution is
not arrived at by the authorities concerned
by then.
Villagers unanimously boycotted the
ZP elections as a mark of protest against
governments failure to protect their cultivable Khazan fields and water sources. A
large group of villagers held a demonstra-
of democracy’ written on them. A
sizeable number of women folk were
also seen demonstrating against the
apathy of the government authorities in
heeding to their rightful demands.
Sankalp Phadte one of the key agitators
said “We are not against democracy but this is our method of
protesting against the indifferent
political system. Our cultivable
paddy fields are being rendered
useless right in front of our eyes
for commercial gains. We will not
allow this to happen,” he adds.
The residents had served a
two-day deadline before actually boycotting the polls and
the Ponda deputy collector had
opened the sluice gates in a bid
to address their problems.
