Pomona Unified School District  Bright Prospect Receives Boost from L.A. County Supervisor C ollege prep program Bright Prospect has catapulted countless Pomona Unified students to success, helping them gain admission to, succeed in and graduate from four-year universities since partnering in 2002. “Bright Prospect has done so much for my life and the lives of so many others,” said Garey High School graduate Juan Ledesma, who attends UCLA. “It’s been an inspiration to me to pursue my dreams of becoming a lawyer and returning to Pomona Unified to give back to those who have helped me.” To bolster the work of Bright Prospect, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis donated $7,500. “You are on your way to a better lifestyle and a better career for yourself and family,” said Solis, who became the first Latina elected to the State Senate and most recently served as the U.S. Secretary of Labor under President Barack Obama. “The sky is the limit. Don’t put any barriers in front of you.” Each student in the program receives college readiness guidance and ongoing mentoring from 10th grade through college graduation. The program serves more than 1,200 PUSD students. “I’m excited that there is such a collective effort among our partners, like Bright Prospect, to support college and career readiness,” Superintendent Richard Martinez said. D esde el establecimiento de la asociación en el año 2002, el programa de preparación para el colegio Bright Prospect ha lanzado a incontables estudiantes al éxito, ayudándoles a lograr la admisión, el triunfo y la oportunidad de graduarse en universidades de cuatro años. “Bright Prospect ha hecho mucho por mi vida y la de muchos otros”, afirmó Juan Ledesma, egresado de la Preparatoria Garey, quien asiste a UCLA. “Ha sido una inspiración para mí, seguir mis sueños de convertirme en abogado y regresar al Distrito Unificado de Pomona a retribuir a aquellos que me han ayudado.” Para reforzar el trabajo de Bright Prospect, Hilda Solís, supervisora del Condado de Los Ángeles, donó $7,500. “Están en camino hacia un mejor estilo de vida, una mejor profesión para ustedes y su familias”, comentó Solís, quien se convirtió en la primera mujer latina electa al Senado Estatal, y recientemente ejerció como Secretaria del Trabajo de Estados Unidos bajo la presidencia de Barack Obama. “El cielo es el límite. No pongan ninguna barrera frente a ustedes.” Cada estudiante en el programa recibe preparación para el colegio y orientación que continua desde el 10° grado hasta que se gradúen del colegio. El programa da servicio a más de 1,200 estudiantes del distrito. “Se necesita un pueblo para ayudarnos y apoyarnos unos a los otros y estoy entusiasmado porque existe tal esfuerzo colectivo entre nuestros socios, como Bright Prospect, que respalda la preparación para la universidad y las carreras profesionales”, afirmó el superintendente Richard Martínez. New Lorbeer Middle School Principal Leads Longhorns to Success F ormer Diamond Ranch High School Assistant Principal and 20-year Pomona Unified educator Angelique Butler has been tapped as Lorbeer Middle School’s new principal. Butler replaces longtime principal Krystana WalksHarper, who is now the District’s Associate Director of Pupil and Community Services. “I look forward to building on the tradition of providing a rigorous and engaging curriculum, as well as honoring the strong history of successes at Lorbeer,” said Butler, a Pomona High School grad. The District is also celebrating promotions of staff members who will helm their respective departments. They include: Tamatha Williams, Assistant Principal at Diamond Ranch High; Anthony Rice, Assistant Principal at Garey High; Dr. Bryan Stoops, Dean of Students at Garey High; Behrad Hosseinzadeh, Dean of Students at Pomona High; Dr. Jennifer Wagner, Director of Educational Technology; Zoila Savaglio, Director of State and Federal Programs; Maryann Gonzalez, Coordinator of Child Development; and Vicki Vazquez, Program Assistant of Child Development.
