ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kayla Riley Kayla Riley is a Civics Instructor at Northwestern Middle School in Jacksonville, Florida. Kayla received her Master in Public Policy and her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Jacksonville University. She also pursued a minor in Philosophy during her undergraduate studies. During her time in the MPP Program, Kayla interned with Congressman Al Lawson’s Fifth Congressional District Office. Kayla has also served Daniel Kids as a weekly volunteer. Areas of Policy Interest: Civil Rights, Criminal Justice, Education, and Public Safety ABOUT THE ADVISOR Professor Shelley Grant Shelley Grant is an Assistant Professor at Jacksonville University, who has been recognized with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (2016). Professor Grant received her Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of North Florida and her Bachelor of Science from Jacksonville University. Professor Grant is a member of the City of Jacksonville’s Task Force on Safety and Crime Reduction and is the Chair of the Mental Health and Substance Abuse subcommittee. Professor Grant also serves the State Attorney’s Office and Kids Hope Alliance as a Diversion Transition Team Member, and was previously a member of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee.
