This poem describes the feeling of a mother who has to face her child’s growth and growing independence. The author uses an extended metaphor comparing her child’s growth with learning to ride a bicycle. This metaphor serves well to explain the fact that the mother has to let her daughter go, experiencing a feeling of emptiness and, at the same time, of worry about what may happen to her daughter when she lacks the mother’s protection.
