I chose this poem because when I read it for the first time I thought it was about a woman, but then I realized that there was another possible interpretation: that “Sorrow” is being personified as a woman. In “My November Guest” a man experiences a feeling of sorrow that matches the atmosphere of autumn (the rain, bare withered tree, sodden pasture lane, birds gone, mist, desolate deserted tree, etc).
At the beginning of the poem, the man cannot see the beauties of autumn no matter how hard Sorrow tries to convince him. However, by the end of the poem, the man admits that he actually enjoys November though without telling it.
