Why I have chosen these poems

I’ve chosen these poems because I wanted to relate all the poems to love, marriage, loneliness and self-confidence. I feel that there is a direct connection here with all these topics since in the poem ‘Barbie girl’ we have this girl that is expected to behave and act in a certain way in order for society to accept her. In addition, in ‘Old maids’ we have also the cultural acceptance of women, the fact that women are supposed to get married and have a family otherwise they are seen as old maids. Both the girl and the old maids are deemed unfit by society. On the other hand we have this woman in ‘How do I love thee?’ that actually falls in love and lives a wonderful life next to the man she loves, even to the day she dies. She never gets to feel lonely, or alone. However, it is important to remark that as the poem ‘The Lake’ states, sometimes that which represents loneliness to some can be seen as a good thing by others. Being alone is not always associated with negativity, it can also be very positive and beneficial, especially when we need to focus on ourselves and our own needs.
