This poem is related to the previous one in many senses:

1) they are both about death.

2) they both enphasize ethnicity: Joy Gardner was a black Jamaican woman and the soldier from "Facing it" is black.

3) the speakers in them are survivers: in "The Death of Joy Gardner" the narrator of the events is an immigrant too, like Joy Gardner, but he has not been caught by the police yet. In "Facing it" the speaker has survived the Vietnam war. Luckily (or maybe not) they both are still alive.

The background is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which is mentioned in the poem.

The author, Yusef Komunyakaa, is looking at it while images from his past come to his mind.

I chose this poem because it really touched me when I read it, I felt sad and sorry for him and all the families which have lost a beloved one during the war.
