The main themes of this poem are death and illegal immigrants. Joy Gardner was a real person who died in front of her mother and son as the result of a violent struggle with three police officers, who wanted to deport her as her visa had expired. The murders were found not guilty, this is ironicly mentioned in the poem (She died,

Nobody killed her

And she never killed herself), If you want to know a bit more about her story go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joy_Gardner

Benjamin Zephaniah is a Jamaican poet who has for a long time fought for the immigrants and the blacks rights.

What I liked most about this poem is the fact that it is based on a real story and that it was written in order to react against the injustices committed by the Empire (Great Britain).

I've chosen a dark background for the poem in order to represent the sadness of it. It is amazing how through the use of words Benjamin Zephaniah makes us feel their fury at the brutalities committed and at the same time their resignation at knowing that nothing can be done to defend their rights.
