To the Rain Tree
With fingers spreading in a verdant net,
Screen us beneath a tender canopy
While soft-dappled radiance your shade begets,
Bestowing rest upon a sultry lea.
Crowned with frilly clumps of bird’s-nest-ferns,
Bathed in layered moss and dragon scales,
This lofty kingdom moist your subjects yearn–
Your emerald benevolence they hail.
O ancient giant evergreen,
Our lives but fleet before your rugged bark:
The dreams of generations you have seen,
The boundless forest dwindling to a park.
A web of life, you veil the world below,
Above, a grassy mountain gently grows.
