What is POD ?

CIRO ’ s Professional Operators Development ( POD ) framework is the recognised skills pathway for railway operators . POD is split into 12 disciplines , which illustrates what successful and effective operators know and deliver across every aspect and specialism of the profession .
Some roles may require you to have knowledge in all sections whereas others may require in-depth knowledge in a select few . Either way , you can use POD to help you understand your role within the whole railway system and target your development to excel .
Although some Essential Knowledge & Experience Elements maybe UK rail focussed , the general principle / model can be applied to all heavy and light rail systems worldwide .

POD self-assessment

The POD self-assessment enables you to look at each section of POD and assess your strengths and gaps . You can then use the development and learning suggestions to target improvements to your skills and knowledge . You may even find that you are in a position to guide others .
You can complete your POD self-assessment in two formats : Using this booklet or digitally on the CIRO Members ’ Portal , where a record of your selfassessments will be kept over time and you can monitor your growth . Download your results to share with your line manager to show progress and identify training requirements .
CIRO ’ s membership resources are aligned to POD so it is easy for you to find material to improve your knowledge .
For example , as events and webinars are tagged to relevant POD sections , you can search the video archive CIRO TV with a specific POD section to focus your learning . CIRO mentors also indicate their specialisms through the POD framework , so you can find a mentor with the knowledge you require .
