PSF Careers & Business Network
hosts event in London
CCF
The Combined Cadet Force welcomed Group
Captain Tucker-Lowe as our Inspecting Officer
in May. He inspected our Ceremonial Guard
Parade and toured through our activity
programme, meeting our cadets and officers as
part of our Biennial Inspection. Over Easter, a
group of cadets travelled to Keswick for a week
of Adventurous Training. It was an exciting and
challenging week filled with activities such as
mountain biking, climbing and kayaking.
Following on from our successful Careers and
Business Network event in Leeds with guest
speaker
Christopher
Oughtred,
former
Chairman of the sixth generation family
business, William Jackson Food Group, the
Network organised another event in London.
The focus for the evening was on
entrepreneurship and business leadership and
we were delighted to have James Sweeting (OP
81-88) as our guest speaker. After leaving
Pocklington School, James trained as a coffee
buyer with Lyons Tetley Ltd, before starting two
new businesses, the multi-award winning coffee
roasting company Lincoln & York Ltd and the
UK’s acclaimed ‘best snack brand’ Pipers Crisps.
He has also diversified into engineering and in
2015 purchased Sumo UK Ltd, a manufacturer
of agricultural machinery which is currently
undergoing a significant restructure.
James shared with guests his insights into being
an entrepreneur and how his belief in
persistency, consistency and strong and
focused leadership has enabled him to
successfully grow his businesses.
Mark Ronan, Headmaster, said “We have had
tremendous interest in our Careers and
Business Network since its launch last
November. Events such as these are fantastic
examples of the ‘Spirit of Pock’ and how our
community
comes
together
to
share
experiences, advice and opportunities.”
The PSF Careers and Business Network is open
to everyone in the wider Pocklington School
community, including current and former
parents, Old Pocklingtonians, current and
former staff and supporters. Its aims are to help
each other thrive in a highly competitive world
and, by working together, to help inspire our
students, and each other, for life. For further

It has been a busy term for the Contingent, but
we have also managed to take ten Fourth Years
to the Welbeck Leadership competition where
we managed to achieve an outstanding third
place. The RAF have made the most of their
flying and gliding opportunities, with many
cadets gaining qualifications. Both sections now
look forward to their respective Summer camps.

The fantastic fund-raising events of the 2017-18
academic year ended on a high this year with
our bi-annual school walk. Each house raised
money for their own charities and walked the
25km route with lots of fun, laughter and a few
blisters along the way. The year has been a huge
success, with our Christmas Jumper and
Samaritans Gift appeal in the Michaelmas term,
and a superb Charity Week in the Lent term
which raised over £3200 in 4 days! On Saturday
1st July, Mrs Wilson and the Wilberforce House
team hosted an Open Gardens event to raise
even more money for their Water Aid charity. All
in all, an outstanding year of fund-raising and a
special mention and thanks to the Upper Sixth
Charity Team, led by Charlotte Austin, Grace
McNamara and Lauren Robinson and for the
financial coordination, Cameron Brown.
