Study Abroad Fair
Committee!
Home Cooking Skills - BTEC students at the
opening of the Art & Design Tech Centre
For the first time ever Pocklington School
hosted a Study Abroad Fair in the Annand VC
Cadet Centre on March 20th. The event was run
in conjunction with The Student World who are
owned by global organisation FPP EDU Media,
experts in the field of connecting students with
international study opportunities.
More students in the UK than ever are
considering studying abroad and in November
2017 The British Council released a report
‘Broadening Horizons’ examining the drivers for
and the barriers to studying abroad for UK
students, providing evidence to support its
outward mobility strategies. One of the key
points of the report was that studying abroad
broadened students’ horizons and helped their
employability.
A global perspective is highly regarded by
employers and a third of the most prominent
executives in the business world have benefited
from international education. With this in mind
pupils and parents not only from our own Forth
Year and above but also pupils in Year 11
upwards from local schools, accompanied by
their parents, were able to meet with up to 20
university representatives from across the globe
including the Rotterdam Business School, the
University of Cincinnati, Heidelberg University
and the University of Melbourne.
This was an exciting opportunity and over fifty
students and parents were welcomed to this
unique occasion to find out more about the
opportunities available abroad.
It's hoped that following the success of the Fair,
we will host a similar event in the future. Thank
you to everyone who attended.
Our new linear Sixth Form curriculum is
reaching the end of its first Lower Sixth cycle.
Further to the successful introduction of BTEC
Sport in 2017, our BTEC provision will expand
from September 2018 as we introduce a BTEC
Extended Certificate (equivalent to one A level
in ICT). The new enrichment qualifications we
have introduced have also been a great
success: our Home Cooking Skills BTEC pupils
have produced some fantastically appetising
meals, including some of the catering for the
recent opening of our new Art and Design
Technology Centre, and have now completed
their final assessments. Equally successful has
been the Level 3 Sports Leadership
qualification,
allowing
participants
to
developing their coaching skills through work
with Prep School pupils and also gain valuable
experience of working with young people and
adults through voluntary work in the wider
community.
This summer will see our first cohort of pupils
achieve GCSEs graded on the 9-1 system. Fifth
Year pupils will receive a ‘mixed currency’ of
grades, with some subjects still working to the
A*-G system alongside others which have
already made the transition to the new model.
Having received internal assessment grading in
the respective systems throughout their
courses, pupils are familiar with how the two
compare, but further information and advice
will also be available when results are issued in
August.
