Prefects
Our thanks and congratulations to our outgoing
Prefects and leaders in our current Upper Sixth.
The Prefect Team has been outstanding this
year, led by Heads of School, Hebe Quinney
and Mikey Smith. The Day and Boarding House
Prefect Teams have also played their part in
ensuring success - and a lot of fun - in the many
House and School events that took place in the
Michaelmas and Lent terms. Thank you all.
A message to the new Prefect Team from
Hebe and Mikey: “This year has come to a very
different kind of end, and the tradition of
passing our gowns to the new Prefect Team is
sadly not a possibility. There is still, however, a
great deal that we look back on with happiness
and gratitude. We came together last
September as a crew of very different people
who had not worked together before. We now
leave as a team and a hearty group with many
shared memories of fond times - not least the
Prefect trip to Keswick (hiking, camping,
cooking with trangias, ghyll-scrambling and
listening to a ukulele – though not in that order).
Being a Prefect at Pocklington School entails a
range of responsibilities and challenges; from
taming the tuck and lunch queues, leading tours
of the campus to the logistics of safely escorting
the school across to Church every Friday. There
comes great pride with being part of the Prefect
Team and we are all grateful for this opportunity.
We want to thank Mr Bond who has done a
great job in supporting us – as he has the
Prefect Teams over many years. We also wish
you, the new Prefect Team, the very best of luck;
be proud of your achievement and enjoy it!’

Near the beginning of lockdown, School Staff
produced more than 500 face shields to meet
requests from various local hospitals, GP
surgeries, care homes, a special needs school
and a secure mental health unit.
Jenny McDowell, Head of Chemistry, began the
drive when she contacted St Leonard's Hospice
and local GP practices to ask if they needed any
safety glasses from our school’s Science labs.
Head of Design, Steve Ellis, used his skills in the
Art and Design Technology Centre using the 3D
printer with Jenny and they produced 48
protective face visors paired with donated
elastic.
Publicity from the first consignment led to more
requests for PPE – along with more volunteers
from teaching and support staff who wanted to
contribute to the effort.
Mrs McDowell said: “We were pleased to be
able to match all the requests that came. A big
thank you to everyone who has helped; it’s been
a fantastic team effort!”
Staff members from across the School have also
been joining the drive to help protect key
workers. Kim Burnside, Day Matron at Fenwick
Smith House, has also been busy sewing NHS
drawstring bags and scrubs.
Heather Young, Head of Religious Studies, is a
volunteer NHS responder and has been knitting
hearts for intensive care patients and bereaved
families.
Head of Geography, Rebecca Brennan, has
been active in the local community, collecting
medication, shopping and distributing Covid-19
leaflets.
Art teacher, Olivia Morris, is an area coordinator
for Pocklington’s volunteer community team,
supporting the isolated and vulnerable, and
Prep School Year Two teacher, Romney Walton,
is also part of the community hub.
Year One teacher, Bonnie Steel, has been
making face masks with her children for the Hull
and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
Chatta, the award-winning online learning
approach developed in partnership with
Pocklington School, is available free of charge to
families during the crisis. So far, more than 3,000
families in 20 countries have downloaded the
ChattaClub app.
