ABOUT
US
We are thrilled that you may be considering an application to
Pocklington School. We have around 750 students aged 3 to 18
under our care, and we are very proud of all they achieve.
Pocklington School has been on our beautiful site, at the edge of
the Yorkshire Wolds, for more than 500 years - ever since Henry
VIII granted us a founding Charter in 1514. Of course, we’ve
changed enormously since then, but essentially, the school we see
today is rooted in the same history, tradition - and passion for the
education of young people.
We are also forward-looking and aim to ‘Inspire for Life’ every
single child and student that comes to us. We’ve welcomed
international students for more than 100 years and now provide
education and pastoral care to around 60 young people each year.
Their families are based all over the world - in Germany, France,
Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Russia, the Ukraine, and further
afield in Nigeria, Malaysia, Hong Kong and mainland China.
Together, international students make up 60% of our total full-
time boarder population They can join us from age 3, if their
families are based nearby, and as boarders from age 7.
Pocklington is not an international school - our curriculum is
quintessentially ‘British’ - but our perspective is global. Overseas
students are welcomed as an integral and much valued part of a
school which delivers a world class educational experience in the
heart of East Yorkshire.
This guide is intended to give you a general idea of what to expect but
changes do occur from time to time and this guide does not form part
of any contract between you or your parents and Pocklington School.
If you do decide to join us your legal relationship with Pocklington
School will be set out in an English language contract, which refers
to the formal prospectus, and is subject to English law. If you wish to
rely on any specific parts of this guide, please let us know and we can
discuss the matter with you before entering into the contract.

International Students in our school
From the outset – the very first phone call or
email – we want every international student to
have the chance to achieve as much as their British
counterparts. We are broadly selective, which
means we test before entry, simply to ascertain
that we have the resources to teach, care for and
nurture each applicant. More details about our
application and testing procedure are below.
All overseas students take lessons alongside their
native-English-speaking peers, working towards
GCSE and A Level success. Our excellent EAL
(English as an Additional Language) Department
offers support in the form of 1:1 or small group
sessions through the week, according to
individual need.
Our committed and experienced EAL colleagues
also train international Sixth Form students for
Cambridge Language Examinations and IELTS
tests, in addition to their mainstream curriculum
courses. They work closely with our University
and Careers Advisor to ensure that each older
international student seeking a place at a university
in the UK or overseas is adequately equipped prior
to application and entry. It’s a specialist business
and we’re very good at it!
