Wednesday, 18 September 2013 14:15 – 14:45 Swim, don’t sink! Ideas on how to keep your team afloat when project life gets tough Tanya Brock & Chris Lawler Mater Health Services In July 2012, Mater Health Services, a hospital provider of private & public services across 7 hospitals in Brisbane completed a successful implementation of a new HR & Payroll system. As you could imagine, the pressure of delivering such an implementation under the shadow of “what can go wrong when you do payroll in health in Queensland” – the team were under extraordinary pressure, both to succeed and deliver the right pay on time to over 7 000 Mater employees, but also to not end up as the leading headline on the 7 o’clock news. Being considerate of that pressure is one thing, but what can you do about it as a PM / Senior Member of a team? Mater used a number of simple but effective interventions to help our whole team maintain their wellbeing (and it wasn’t a lifetime supply of fizzy drinks and chocolate!). The interventions were varied and were dependant on judging and asking what was required. You will have encountered them before; things like managing fatigue, delivering through planned and unplanned leave, needing team members to be social enough to work together to get the job done, differing levels of resilience and maintaining some level of balance in work and home life. ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ 41 ©PMOz 2013
