Project Management Begins in the Board Room Terence Blythman Senior Delivery Consultant MetaPM
This paper puts the case for project people to have a much greater voice than they currently do in the way businesses select and initiate projects, as well as in their management. For a long time, thought leaders in the project management literature have been discussing projects as vehicles for implementing business strategy. Yet there is little evidence that project based organisations are structuring their project management to match best practice considerations. The value of having project people involved in selection and aligning processes is obvious to project people, but evidently not so for most people in the business world at large. In this paper, we will consider the various organisations and their attitudes of toward project management. We will discuss how this attitude varies between an expectation of task management and a deliverer of strategic benefit, identifying the prevailing attitude and how it aligns with the project management communities espoused best practice. Finally we will investigate the evolving paradigm of organisations becoming more reliant on projects and projects becoming more complex, and highlight how the inclination of organisations to conduct projects without the proper organisational context is becoming exceedingly dangerous. There are still far too many cases of failure to do the right projects right. There is a clear need for project people to have a voice in in the way businesses select, initiate and manage their projects. The Project Management community needs to now take control of the perception of projects, influence the way in which standards, competencies and expectations are applied within business, and provide support and value at the executive level. This influence may rely on a more focussed endeavour to understand what it is about the general business community that limits the perception of the strategic value of project management and respond accordingly.
