PLUS MODEL MAGAZINE November 2015 Indie Designer Issue | Page 114

Many years ago I was one of the models that designer Richard Metzger brought along to a Project Runway casting. I remember when they said there was no place for plus size fashion on this particular platform. I will never forget how much Richard argued on behalf of plus size women, but clearly he came before the fashion industry was ready for us. Season 14 features plus size designer Ashley Nell Tipton and we are so excited to have the opportunity to speak to her as she makes history. How long have you been designing and what prompted you to pursue a career in fashion? I began designing in 2009 and was inspired by my grandmother. Growing up and not being able to find clothing that I wanted made me want to design even more. I would place fabrics on my body but I was not sure if designing was for me because I dressed like a tomboy. At the time it was the only type of clothing that was around for me. Once I got into high school I got into theater and wanted to work with the costumes, and so it all began from there. Ashley Nell Tipton Designs came out in 2011 with it’s own flare, where did you draw your inspiration from? At the time I was working at Torrid and was inspired by the clothing that was NOT in the industry as compared to what was available for straight size women. I love thinking outside the box and by working there I listened to what women were looking for. I decided I wanted to be that designer that would go against the grain to create plus size clothing. You have only been designing 6 years and decided to put yourself out there to Project Runway. That took a lot of confidence!
