PLUS MODEL MAGAZINE January 2015 Issue | Page 101

@marissavilla What’s an appropriate age to start plus size modeling? The modeling industry is open to girls as young as 16. A parent or guardian will have to be present and accompany you to castings, and time restrictions may be imposed on set. Plus size models have an age advantage, some have been able to work through their 40’s. @rougeandbooks Are there agencies that don’t force you to wear shapers under clothing when you are a plus size model? Agencies are responsible for grooming and getting their models ready for castings and modeling jobs. Your model’s bag should always include things like shoes, bras and shapers. Being prepared could make the difference between getting booked once, and a recurring client. @shambamm12 You see mostly plus size models who are “curvy” (i.e. they have a ‘plump’ round bum, defined waist etc.) I’m plus sized but not in the the shape I see most working plus size models. I also have cellulite and stretch marks that are obvious. Would all these things affect a chance to model? So here is the TRUTH! Many of the models you see DO have cellulite and bumps just like the rest of us. However, clothing companies tweak the images to get rid of them. The fashion industry as a whole is about selling fantasy and inspiration and the plus size industry follows suit. I will say that in comparing both industries, the plus size industry is pretty modest when it comes to their use of photo shop. In terms of “shape” I will share something with you. PMM has featured models that do not have a traditional hourglass shape and the response was not great. We thought we were pushing the envelope in being inclusive but we have found that women respond strongly to that particular shape even if they themselves do not have that shape.
