VP: Playing the role of ‘Mama’ made me pull from the memories of my own Mamma, who’s no
longer with us, but she was a strong matriarch of the family, who held our family together with
the belief in God and faith to be the bonding factor of our family. She believed the idea “the
family that prays together, stays together.” I emotionally had to resurface these characteristics
of my mother to inspire me, and that’s always hard for me because I miss her. It gave fuel to my
character choice as ‘Mama King’.
Do you feel that you are much like the character that you played? (Physically,
personality, etc.) .
VP: I’m like ‘Mama King’ in the sense of her faith in God/the Bible being non-negotiable and her
rock/foundation. I am very nurturing as well, and extremely protective of my family and friends.
