10 BUSINESS AND TRAINING
Seek Out Support . Look for mentors and role models within the industry . Many experienced professionals , both men and women , are willing to offer guidance and support .
Get Educated : Enrol in a good training programme or apprenticeship . Education and hands-on experience will equip you with the skills you need and boost your confidence .
Network . Join industry associations and groups where you can meet other women in the trades . Networking can provide support , advice , and job opportunities .
Stay Persistent . There may be challenges along the way , but persistence is crucial . Keep pushing forward and don ’ t let setbacks discourage you .
Advocate for Yourself . Speak up if you face any discrimination or unfair treatment . Your voice is important , and advocating for yourself can help bring about positive change .
Getting a woman ’ s perspective .
For instance , one challenge I encountered was the lack of properly fitting safety gear designed for women . This issue has started to be addressed as more companies recognise the importance of providing appropriate equipment for all employees , but there is still room for improvement . Overall , while there has been significant progress , continuous efforts are needed to ensure equal opportunities and a supportive work environment for women in the plumbing industry .
To young women considering a career in plumbing or electrical work but feeling intimidated , I would offer the following advice :
Believe in Yourself . Confidence is key . Trust in your abilities and know that you can succeed in this field just as much as anyone else .
Focus on the Positive . Remember the rewarding aspects of the job , such as solving problems , helping people , and seeing the tangible results of your work .
Be Open to Learning . The trades are constantly evolving with new technologies and techniques . Stay curious and open to learning throughout your career .
Embrace Diversity . Understand that diversity brings strength to any team . Your unique perspective and skills can contribute significantly to your workplace .
Find Your Passion . If plumbing or electrical work is something you ’ re passionate about , let that drive you . Passion can help you overcome any barriers you might face . PA
