Fitting Thought
Loving February

This month we look at rainwater harvesting again , but this time with our focus on pumps .
In November last year , I got the chance to sit in on a rainwater harvesting session . It was an hour-long presentation that was held at PIRB ’ s World Toilet Day event .
I listened keenly , because rainwater harvesting and backup water systems have become the topic of conversation everywhere , at every plumbing event , from plumbers ’ evenings to PTE shows . The reason for this is abundantly clear : the looming water crisis and the need for homeowners to create some sort of backup water system .
If you haven ’ t yet made this a part of your business , it ’ s time to put some effort into learning what is needed to do these installations in a way that ’ s SANS and industry compliant . This month we take a good hard look at pumps specifically in terms of rainwater harvesting .
Our project looks at student accommodation in Braamfontein , Johannesburg and takes a detailed look at the new water heating plant that had to be created for the building .
One of the questions I often get asked at various plumbing events is “ What happened to the Wall of Shame ?” It doesn ’ t matter which event I ’ ve been at , at least three plumbers have asked about it . I have sheepishly replied that the feature is now online . This answer was often met with mumbling and the shaking of heads .
It has been clear from our readers ’ reactions that the Wall of Shame is a part of the magazine that has been greatly missed . So , I have some good news : you all asked for it and you got it . The Wall of Shame is back by popular demand ! We have given your much-loved favourite a little makeover and it is now called Can You Fix This ?
That ’ s absolutely right . Starting in this issue , you will find your favourite ( and often most horrifying ) bad plumbing installations . We would love to hear from you regarding your thoughts on these installations , how you would fix them ( or perhaps , in some cases where they are so bad , burn them ) and we would be delighted if you sent us any of your own plumbing horrors you would like us to publish in Can You Fix This ? Send your good quality photo Tanya at PIRB ’ s World Toilet Day event of the bad installation you ’ ve seen along with a short description ( include whether you were called to fix the installation or you simply came across it while on the job ) and if you would like to , give us your name and company name so we can mention you . Send all your Can You Fix This ? pics to tanya @ interactmedia . co . za . Yours could end up in our next issue ! PA
