Plumbing Africa thanks BluLever Education for providing coverage of their ongoing Women on Tools campaign , which aims to change the narrative about women in the trades by sharing the success stories of female apprentices . Livhu Mudau talks about her experience in her own words .
I was determined to prove that anyone , regardless of gender could excel in this trade . GSK company recognised my potential and provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate my abilities . This experience not only boosted my confidence but also challenged me to continuously learn and improve my skills . I am grateful for the chance to contribute to the plumbing industry .

One instance where I felt I had to prove myself was during a physically demanding task . We were tasked with digging a trench to locate a leaking pipe , a job that typically requires significant physical strength . While some of my male colleagues may have assumed I couldn ' t handle the physical labour , I was determined to prove them wrong . I rolled up my sleeves , grabbed a pickaxe and worked alongside my team , demonstrating my strength and determination . By the end of the day , the trench was dug , and I had earned the respect of my colleagues .
The most rewarding aspect of working in the plumbing industry is the sense of accomplishment that comes from solving complex problems and improving people ' s lives . It ' s incredibly satisfying to diagnose a plumbing issue , implement a solution , and see the relief on a customer ' s face .
As a female tradesperson , I believe I bring a unique perspective to the workplace . I often approach challenges with a fresh mindset and a focus on detail . This has led to innovative solutions and improved efficiency . For instance , during a recent project I suggested a new approach to pipe installation that not only saved time but also reduced the risk of leaks . My colleagues were impressed with the results and acknowledged the value of my input .
Livhu Mudau , Future Fixer
As I delved deeper into the world of plumbing , I discovered a passion for problem-solving and hands-on work . I enjoy the satisfaction of completing a job well done and the knowledge that I am contributing to essential infrastructure . While there may still be challenges associated with being a woman in a male-dominated field , I am proud to be part of a growing number of female plumbers who are making a significant impact .
My biggest challenge was the language barrier . I was more accustomed to using my native language , while in the workplace English was the primary language of communication . I was determined to overcome this obstacle and spent extra time learning and practicing the language . Another challenge I faced was being the only woman in a maledominated workplace . I had to prove my skills and dedication , and I did this by staying positive , working hard , and always striving for excellence . These experiences , while challenging , have made me stronger and more resilient .
I ' ve noticed a positive shift in attitudes towards women in the plumbing industry since I started my apprenticeship . More and more women are entering the trade , and there ' s a growing recognition of their skills and abilities . The common issue is the assumption that women are not physically capable of handling demanding tasks . I strive to maintain a professional demeanour , communicate effectively and demonstrate my skills through hard work and dedication to prove them wrong .
My advice to young women interested in plumbing is to pursue your passion without fear . Don ' t let stereotypes hold you back . With hard work , determination and quality training , you can excel in the plumbing industry . Seek out mentors , network with other women in the industry and stay positive . Remember your skills and dedication are what truly matter . PA
