Stability and learning

By
Rory Macnamara
Last month we bid farewell to the outgoing Executive Director of IOPSA , Brendan Reynolds , and this month we welcome Steve Brown as the incoming Executive Director – a role he has successfully filled a few times .
Brown comes from over three decades of service to IOPSA and is a qualified plumber . In this turbulent time , plumbing will be going back to basics to stabilise IOPSA and its values – building on the work Reynolds started . One of the pressing issues is already being worked upon , as IOPSA has started bringing all parts of the industry together .
In this issue , the CETA column talks about the development of scarce skills , of which plumbing is one . The column is well worth reading as it opens new doors – not only for qualified plumbers , but also for those wishing to become qualified plumbers .
Uwe continues his series on contracts , and those sometimes ‘ hidden ’ clauses that we overlook which can result in the contract not ending well for the plumber .
ServCraft discusses branding – probably the most important aspect of any business . While making use of well-known consumer brands , manufacturers and companies must take note of the success of these brands and what it takes to reach brand recognition . If one does not pay attention to the brand , the result will be no ROI !
We welcome Chris Coetzee as a regular contributor from this issue , where he introduces us to the S . L . A . M principle of occupation , health and safety . Coincidentally , the IAPMO contribution discusses the same matter – reinforcing the need for safety in every manner possible and the consequences of ignoring the OSH Act .
Our ‘ Tell me why you became a plumbing contractor ?’ is Thabang Makgoba , and his enthusiasm will be catching when one reads it .
The ‘ What ’ s in my toolbox ?’ series continues and shows how technology is assisting plumbers in making and taking calls , while work continues uninterrupted .
Patrick discusses the pressure reducing valve in relation to SANS 10254 and the essential role it plays in the installation of this piece of equipment – which , if done incorrectly , can cause much harm .
Have a great and profitable month . PA
