25. Cancellation terms What happens if the client cancels after accepting the contract, including possible charges for materials ordered or work already done. It is important to clarify in this section that all charges will be based on proven costs.
26. Dispute resolution How disputes will be handled, including written communication, meetings, mediation or legal steps if necessary, as well as the details of who you would use in such an event.
27. Acceptance and signatures Space for the acceptor, account payer and plumber to sign and date the contract, confirming acceptance of all terms and conditions.
A contract protects both parties by clearly recording the agreed work, costs, payment terms, responsibilities, exclusions, additional work procedures and conditions of service. It confirms that the client has approved the work and that the plumber is authorised to proceed, in the form of a written agreement.
Quote = Price and scope of work.
Terms and conditions = How the work will be carried out and how anomalies will be dealt with.
The quote and terms and conditions are often signed before the contract, and set the foundation for how the work will be carried out.
Contract = A written and signed agreement between the client and plumber, confirming the quote and terms and conditions.
Advantages of a contract
• Contracts create a strong impression of professionalism to the client – no tech speak, professional communication, no ambiguity in their mind, responsibility of each party. Draws away from price, focuses on professionalism.
• Contracts show the client that they are dealing with an organised, reliable and serious plumber.
• A signed contract gives both the client and plumber peace of mind, as all of the important details have been confirmed in writing.
• Contracts provide a clear understanding between the client and the plumber before the work begins.
• Contracts reduce uncertainty and help prevent misunderstandings later in the project.

This is where the contract comes in. By staying professional and referring back to the contract, the plumber protects both the business and the client relationship. Clear documentation and communication during the project( to be covered in Part 2 of this feature series) helps avoid blame, reduces misunderstandings and allows the work to continue in a fair and organised manner.
