Train , train , train !
And we are not talking about PRASA ’ s unfit for purpose trains but the emphasis on training plumbers .
The ARPL programme has been around for a while now and it offers great opportunities for a plumber to qualify or get much closer to qualifying . Those employing workers should see those that have potential and put them on such a course . Goodness knows we need more qualified plumbers in this country .
Good to see local manufacture starting up in the country with the arrival of the RIIFO pipe . Not only does it see substantial investment in the country but future development to supply to a wider market in Africa . Speaking of local manufacture , in this issue we commence our regular series on local manufacturers with Advanced Valves . Next issue we will look at Railman Grabrails . Know of a local manufacturer that is SANS accredited for compulsory standards – we would love to chat with them .
Our feature takes us to tanks , gutters , and downpipes . Probably one of the most underrated parts of the plumbing sector . Sadly , yes , we have lost or have very few left , a great skill in sheet metal working but the point is , this system is poorly maintained resulting in damage to buildings and property . Stormwater is wasted when we desperately need it in the water process . Perhaps we should put together a skills designation entitled ‘ Gutter cleaning ’ and create a new opportunity or better still , plumbers can offer this in their Preventative Maintenance offering .
IAPMO ’ s article on toilets in space makes for fascinating reading . This month , in part 2 , we look at the progress of space toilets throughout the age of space travel . Especially important was the system that recognised both sexes , considering how many more women are becoming astronauts .
The work commissioned by the Water Research Commission on closing the gap in water standards is long overdue and will impact on some of the other efforts like a Water labelling system , water in the National Building Regulations ( itself decades overdue ) and Water Efficiency in Buildings . It will require some government bodies and local authorities to adjust their thinking and their by-laws and that is also long overdue .
We continue with our SA Women in Plumbing and Tell me why you became a Plumbing Contractor series as well as the Valve series which this month looks at which way to position a valve .
