In-service TVET Lecturer development is a critical priority for DHET , and emphasis is placed on enabling TVET lecturers from all vocational pathways ( CoS / DSPP , NC ( V ) and NATED ) to acquire the skills and competencies required to move from ‘ lecturer ’ to ‘ facilitator ’ of industry-relevant and work-situated learning in the 21st century .
A core focal area in the collaboration between DHET and the GIZ Skills Development for a Green Economy II Programme ( SD4GE II ) is thus to assist TVET personnel to adapt to their newly-adapted role and identity . The Skills Development for a Green Economy Programme ( SD4GE ) II is a German Technical Cooperation Programme implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit ( GIZ ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development ( BMZ ).
Among a range of other capacity-building measures , an innovative capacity building of in-service TVET lecturers in the fields of electrical and plumbing ( as exemplary trades ) is implemented through the Project-Based Teaching & Learning Programme ( Module 1-5 ).
The training programme , which has been piloted since September 2020 ( with a total of 60 Electrical & Plumbing lecturers ) is a customised , modular approach to enable integrated , worksituated learning aligned to the needs of 21st-century artisans . The mainly virtual training concept not only assists in-service TVET lecturers to facilitate project-based training ( including latest green technologies ) but also focuses on new ways of teaching and learning in a digital era ( using platforms such as a Moodle-Based LMS , BigBlueButton , Zoom , MS Teams , virtual and 360 degrees , live streams from industry sites , and so on ). The training has been endorsed through the respective South African Electrical ( ECASA ) and Plumbing industry association ( IOPSA ) to ensure strong linkages to industry .
The Future of Learning is Here !
Real-life project-based learning across trades Key to the learning journey in the programme is real-life industry projects from the South African Plumbing and Electrical trade context .
With the help of four external local and international experts ( two local electrical and plumbing , and two international electrical and plumbing experts ), TVET lecturers are confronted with a client project , which they must resolve by going through an industry common full action cycle for a project .
