FITTING THOUGHT 1 Never stop learning Train, train, and train. Once you have completed your apprenticeship or you have qualified — you are not done. Technology changes daily, thus you need to keep abreast of what is happening in the industry. IOPSA and the PIRB are constantly organising webinars and get-togethers and encouraging technical experts to write for the industry to keep their continuing professional development (CPD) points up to date. An interesting conversation I had with a national executive member of IOPSA in Cape Town recently, is that he believes that plumbers sell themselves short — you are a professional with technical knowledge that others do not have. Do not sell yourself short or undercut your invoices just for the sake of getting the job. Advocate and sell your knowledge when quoting on a job. such as registering your employers for CPD points — read more about this on page 15. In the second part of a series by Chris Kyle, who talks about the basic theory of fluid mechanics for plumbing, we report on the pressure that is applicable to plumbing. Simply put, pressure is the force that causes water to flow in a plumbing system and thus the amount of pressure available will determine the performance that the user of a plumbing system will experience, either good or bad. Read about this on page 56. As always, we value your engagement, so if you have any compliments, complaints, or suggestions, please get in touch at [email protected]. This is your magazine; we want to hear from you. Until next time, happy plumbing! Gone are the days of the ‘plumber’s crack’ image. You are in charge of the health installations of buildings and homes.
