Plumbing Africa
So much information,
so little regard …
With all the information we could possibly want, at our fingertips,
why do we keep setting it aside?
Have we become desensitised to the multiple flows of information that
inundates us each day? I think yes, we have. But is it right? I think no;
we cannot evade the information that we need to function correctly as
responsible professionals.
The whole world seems to be bursting at the seams with information,
blogs, articles, social media platforms, and people telling you how to
run your business. Yet, the reality for most, I believe, is that even though
we are overloaded with information and choice, we need to distinguish
what is important and keep up to speed with what is going on around
us and in our business sectors.
For many this may be tedious or a burden, but come the time
when something is out of place or not complying with standards or
regulations that have left you behind, then you may wish you had
made more of an effort. Another important topic off the top of my
head is trends and the technology that goes along with that, and
knowing what is available to the market. More and more consumers
are becoming product savvy and doing detailed research on products
and how-tos, and you should be in a position to give them advice
— not being unaware of what they are looking for or what they are
referring to.

I was astounded recently to discover, through compiling an article,
that many people in the industry are not clued-up with technology that
has already been around for years. This is a point of concern for me,
especially considering the dramatic changes we have witnessed in the
world over the past few years: the changes in climate conditions, the
changes to how people work, and innovations. I don’t believe there is
room in any business for the ‘same old’ anymore.
Maybe some food for thought: everyone is looking for more
opportunities and more business, but neglecting to master what is
already in their business circle, maintaining that same disregard for the
other valuable information right under their noses.
In this edition of Plumbing Africa, we start looking at wastewater as a
resource through the World Water Development Report of the UN on
page 14. Our feature this month looks at electronic taps, as they play
a key role in places of high-volume use and can contribute greatly to
water savings (page 41). We continue with the legionella control studies,
and our project is the Clandale Projects rainwater harvesting system on
page 28, which was driven by the need to manage heavy rainfall.
I trust you will enjoy another loaded edition of Plumbing Africa, and if
you wish to get in touch, please do so: [email protected]
Happy plumbing! Ben
