Comply or lose your job !

Compliance is a non-negotiable practice in plumbing .
By
Rory Macnamara or Grumpy
Whilst the Executive Director specifically speaks of copper in his column , IOPSA has previously mentioned other issues where non-compliance is rearing its ugly head to the detriment of quality plumbing . Apart from copper , we have refurbished geysers , makeshift PVC , taps and mixers and the list goes on .
Mess with copper is costly for the individual as insurance will not cover any damage if the tube is non-compliant . No guessing who will have to pay up in that case ! The requirements for use of copper are simple and spelt out clearly in SANS 460:2011 .
We welcome a new Plumbing Association , Kasi2Kasi PA , meaning ‘ township 2 township .’ There is a great need for this organisation , and it is exciting to see that there are people who are doing plumbing work that want to upgrade their skills to qualification . The association has signed an MOU with IOPSA and PIRB . We look forward to the industry supporting this initiative .
Our ‘ tell me why ’ series serves both to acknowledge a plumber and introduce the new chairman of the Southern Cape region .
Our ‘ women in plumbing ’ and ‘ women on site ’ articles continue . It is so encouraging to see the essential role women fill in the industry , not only in the field , but in the offices and the engine rooms of businesses too .
Uwe Putlitz continues his discussion on the relationship between the contractor and subcontractor in part two of his article . He continues to make , as always , important and valid points about entering contracts and relationships .
Vollie continues his discussion on the by-laws and their status in relation to standards in part two of his article .
SA Watermark poses some interesting points on the matter of standards worldwide and the impact that one standard can have on another , especially if the standard belongs to another country .
Charles Freedman and Duncan Keil talk about getting one ’ s “ head out of the sand and into the clouds ” with their topic being software that makes one more efficient and creates less of a paper hassle for the customer .
The catalogue for the two Plumbing Travelling Exhibitions ( PTE ) appears in this issue . We have adopted two exhibitions in one week – another new but successful concept that allows companies to see a many visitors within one week . The exhibitions will be held in the East Rand on 3 October , and Johannesburg North on 5 October 2023 .
Our feature this issue is on lithium batteries and tools . One looks at efficiency , especially when on site where batteries versus electricity are compared in terms of life span , charging , batteries and usefulness where most are standard for a range of tools rather than one batteryone tool . There seems to be a slow take-up in South Africa , but those who have made the change will never look back .
Our project is the Plumblink Head Office and Distribution Centre in Woodmead that has a showroom which enables customers to comfortably walk around before making their choice .
Patrick takes us through the role and function of a deaerator , adding more technical knowledge to our readers . PA
