Fitting Thought

And we are not talking about PRASA ’ s unfit for purpose trains but the emphasis on training plumbers .
As I write this Spring has sprung and it is still cold ! This issue we have a variety of topics to appeal to all .
The executive director ’ s report presented at the IOPSA AGM is published , highlighting the achievements of the body .
Uwe Putlitz continues his series and this issue he discusses Contractual Claims , a potential minefield if not followed to the last full stop . Do not for one moment believe this topic is for the big jobs , even the maintenance plumber must consider contracts for his clients .
Vollie Brink takes us through the rational design and the role it plays . Plumbers working with engineers who do rational designs need to acquaint themselves with the thought process and adapt accordingly .
This issue carries the catalogue for the Pretoria Plumbing Exhibition to be held on the 6 th of October at CBC Mount Edmund and promises to be a great event enabling the plumbers from Brits , Hartebees , Pretoria and Centurion to attend .
For our local manufacturer we look at Railman Grabrails , providing a great story on how a business starts and through sheer sweat and no doubt some tears it can grow into a formidable company offering a valuable service .
IAPMO discusses the critical role of plumbing and regulations as well as the simplicity of their accreditation certificates , so no one is left in any doubt as to the scope of the accreditation .
Earlier in the year we looked at sub soil drainage and this issue we look at a practical example of an installation that required some clever thinking to meet the challenges this situation presented . The project shows that sub soil is not just too much water in one place and one hopes the sun will evaporate it , but rather a clear application of how to solve the issue permanently .
In our regulars we present our Women in Plumbing series as well as our Tell me why series . Patrick Gordon provides food for thought on dirt in valves . The Last Word challenges our industry in more ways than one to become more united in order to tackle the challenges the industry faces in terms of unqualified people doing plumbing work and our isolated thinking . Hopefully it will let us all take a step back and provide positive solutions rather than negatives .
Enjoy the read . PA

Our feature is Taps and Mixers reflecting only those manufacturers / importers that comply with the compulsory standards . This topic is a vexing one as it seems to be a free for all with non-compliant taps and mixers entering our market willy nilly with no control . A matter we are raising , and have been for some time , with the Regulator and the DTIC , neither of which seem to understand compulsory standards nor their role in enforcement .
