50 MAINTENANCE 50 MAINTENANCE A day in the life of a maintenance plumber In a recently-watched episode of Devious Maids, the following conversation took place between desperate housewife A and devious maid B: “I hope you didn’t seduce the plumber again… you know they charge by the hour!” Plumbing Africa thought it better get to the bottom of what happens behind closed doors when the plumber comes visiting. By Eamonn Ryan To get a sneak peek into a day in the life of a plumbing professional, we caught up with Jamie Hopcroft, a plumber with 14-years’ experience and, as a business development manager for Burgess Plumbing Services. He’s in charge of five teams or about 15 plumbers or apprentices. After 14 years of working for one company, Hopcroft still loves his job – getting up at 05:30 to be on site by 07:00 and being on call 24/7. The latter happens several times a week, he says, so it’s more an inevitability rather than just being ‘on call’. What keeps him motivated to go to work every morning is fixing peoples’ problems and the variety of challenges.
