A day in the life
of a maintenance
plumber
In a recently-watched episode of Devious Maids,
the following conversation took place between
desperate housewife A and devious maid B: “I hope
you didn’t seduce the plumber again… you know
they charge by the hour!” Plumbing Africa thought
it better get to the bottom of what happens behind
closed doors when the plumber comes visiting.

To get a sneak peek into a day in the life of a plumbing professional, we
caught up with Jamie Hopcroft, a plumber with 14-years’ experience and,
as a business development manager for Burgess Plumbing Services. He’s in
charge of five teams or about 15 plumbers or apprentices. After 14 years of
working for one company, Hopcroft still loves his job – getting up at 05:30 to
be on site by 07:00 and being on call 24/7. The latter happens several times a
week, he says, so it’s more an inevitability rather than just being ‘on call’.
What keeps him motivated to go to work every morning is fixing peoples’ problems and
the variety of challenges. I’m not someone who can sit behind a desk eight hours a day, I
need variety in what I do and enjoy interacting with people.”
