Who cares?
It is disheartening to see that no matter where you go or to whom
you speak and in what sector, the ‘no-care attitude’ surfaces in
the conversation.
To some degree, we are all guilty of naming and shaming others —
the government, the authorities, even that bad driver that cut you off in
the traffic. It seems as if it is always up to someone else to make the
change or to act differently. Yet, if we had to be honest with ourselves,
we would acknowledge the way in which our own choices play a part in
the bigger picture.
I think back to when I was much younger and we used to play in the
pool (I’m sure you too may have played this game): we would all go
around and around creating a whirlpool until we had created a strong
current, then everyone would turn around and struggle against the
current. It was a difficult task as a team, but if your friends got out of the
pool and let you battle the current by yourself, defeat was inevitable.
This situation I liken to what we must face on a daily basis when
we are swimming in an upstream world. Often, it is too easy to skip
compliance or do the right thing, to avoid taking responsibility, or
to support goods or services that we know are substandard. Then,
as the group that battles the current gets smaller and smaller, it
becomes an immense task to self-correct. It becomes ‘someone
else’s problem’. We persistently and increasingly find this situation

cropping up everywhere because we prefer to make someone else
responsible or to choose a quick buck rather than honest money.
These are situations that offer a temporary solution to a permanent
problem. It becomes easier to just do it the way everyone else is
doing it, rather than to strive towards being different and to care
about long-term decisions. And yes, doing it right is more of a
challenge, but it can be achieved if there are more people and
companies who care. We all have a say in the outcomes of our
industries and lives.
In this issue, we look at wastewater quality and the scarcity of water
on page 20. Our feature on page 51 is on polymer pipes and fittings
as well as rainwater harvesting guidelines according to the Water
Research Commission. We continue the discussion on different
methods of legionella control through the superheat method on
page 29, and our project is the Dr SK Matseke Memorial Hospital
in Dobsonville on page 34. Don’t forget to complete the IOPSA
questionnaire on page 59 to qualify for your CPD points.
