FITTING THOUGHT 1

To be or not to be , that is the question !

Whilst not wishing to ‘ ham ’ up Hamlet , it is a question we continually need to be asking ourselves in our industry .
Our article on ‘ The future of the one-person plumber ’ is highly relevant . Ultimately , one can draw their own conclusion as to what they want to be or where one wants to be . No one decides this for any individual – only yourself . But , understand that running a business is not for sissies , only dedicated and committed individuals with perhaps a bit of insanity !
Our contributors provide their usual inputs by keeping us on track .
This month ’ s feature is ‘ Tools and Tooling ’, which is the very essence of a plumber . Arrive with cheap and nasty tools , and you ’ ll do a cheap and nasty job . Arrive with the right tools , do the job properly and quickly , and it shows your professionalism .
Our project in this issue , Union Square , takes a slightly different angle in that we look at a project in Johannesburg ’ s inner city . We also take an important slant in presenting the project . We want to highlight the Wet Services side , both engineer and plumber , whilst retaining the overall story . Inner city development is a growing business and offers great challenges to the engineer and plumber . Converting from an office building to residential requires out of the box thinking .
We have two profiles : one on a plumber with an MBA and the other who has worked his way up from being a financial advisor to one committed to helping others such as in Diepsloot – one of our most poverty-stricken settlements .
To be or not to be , only you can answer that question . Qualified or not , ongoing learning and looking for the opportunities trumps believing that after apprenticeship you know it all . Covid-19 , whilst not to be celebrated in any way , certainly exposed the weaknesses in our country around water . PA
