Building a successful
business, year after year
Many of us would read a headline like this and pass it by
because of one of two scenarios: you believe your business
is successful already, or you believe success is something
that will happen after a period of time if you just put in the
hard work. The unfortunate reality of either scenario is that
both answers are incorrect. Building success takes constant
work, planning, strategy, and revision.
I recently attended an event where a guest speaker posed the
question to the audience: “How do you build a business that
lasts for 50 or 100 years?” Many answered that you need
staff, a product, planning, and lots of research — all of which
are correct and have their place, but the main thing that we
regularly forget, is the manner in which we need to adapt our
businesses to drastic changes in the markets.
Nowadays, the saying ‘adapt or die’ is already seen as old hat, but
who has really adapted? The changes in technology, industry, and
the world happen so often that we constantly need to be seeking
out better and more efficient ways to run our businesses, from
apps and technology to regular training programmes. Upskilling
ourselves is no longer a ‘nice to have’, but rather an essential
element of business as we adjust to the changes around us.
As we enter the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the
interconnectivity of everything in our lives, how far ahead of the
game are you? Have you adapted your life and your business?

Do you even know what the Fourth Industrial Revolution is
about and how it will affect the industry and your business?
What should you change in your business to capitalise on the
emerging opportunities? These are the type of things to which
you should apply your mind and that you need to know to
determine your position on the progress curve.
In this edition of Plumbing Africa, we continue with the Water
Research Commission’s grey water and rainwater series on
pages 46 and 44, respectively. Our project in this issue is the
Antarctic base, which proves another fascinating case study
on page 60. We look at piping technologies (page 23) and we
get to know Charlene Joubert in the personality profile on page
66. We also take this opportunity to wish Burgess and Partners
Plumbing Services well as they celebrate their 40th anniversary
in the plumbing sector, which is a great achievement — read
more on page 50.
Don’t forget to enter the blockword competition on page 68
— it’s free and fun.
Your comments and thoughts are well received, as we always
