Fitting thought 1 Plumbing Africa Are we only what we are taught? Nearly everyone would say no to this question, but in reality, we may need to reconsider. We are seemingly living in failing environments: we experience a lack in service delivery and have little innovation to inspire where it is needed most. Now although we may consider ourselves to be lateral thinkers, most of us think about the here and now because this is all we know or have been taught. It is akin to that saying: “Your kids do what you do, not what you say.” and look at trends in the industry going into 2018 on page 50, whereas our project is the Nedbank Sunninghill Campus, where an off-grid water system has been installed (page 38). We also explore some of the faults with the previous ‘Plumbing Wall of Shame’ installations. Check out the new ‘Wall of Shame’ and note that this month we are having a competition to identify all the compliance issues, so submit your entry! We all have bad habits and what we often lose sight of is that somewhere, someone is watching us and perhaps imitating those bad habits. Inadvertently, we could be teaching others who are looking up to us the wrong things — but will be sure to reprimand that person if he or she emulates you. This is the same as ‘walking the talk’. If we want to complain about how bad everything is, how close to the front of the queue are you to actually doing something about it yourself? If no one is doing anything then, logically, nothing is going to change. If we want to transfer our knowledge, directly or indirectly, we need to understand that this goes hand in hand with our actions, which have a far greater impact than our words do. Keep on teaching the right things through your actions and actively participate in your industries. In this issue, we continue looking at the rainwater harvesting guidelines on page 34.
