‘I strive to stand out in
the plumbing industry’
Plumbing Africa spoke to female plumber Mphela Khomutso
who wants to progress as far as possible in the industry.
“My responsibilities as a plumber include the
installation of pipes and geysers, planning the layout
of drains, repairing existing pipes and geysers, and
maintenance,” says Khomutso.
About her future goals Khomutso says, “I see myself
becoming a successful businesswoman in plumbing. I
want to become a plumbing master and I want to serve
my customers with pride.”
She says that she started her journey in this field in 2011
when she joined a learnership programme. “I found
plumbing to be very interesting. When the programme
ended in March 2012, the Department of Public Works
sent us to Capricorn FET College, where I studied and
obtained my N2 certificate in civil engineering.
“My work philosophy is that I provide good service to my
customers, as service is the most important aspect of my
business.”
“Public Works then took us back into the department,
where we embarked on the apprenticeship programme
and I finally qualified as an artisan plumber.”
In terms of further qualifications, Khomutso also has a
completed FET college trade test certificate, which she
obtained at Indlela College.
“Being a plumber is a very interesting job. You get to save
water from leaking pipes and you help to improve people’s
lives by providing clean sanitation for all,” she says.
“I am eager to learn more about plumbing. We all know
that plumbing materials are changing often, and we have
to keep up with the trends. I am a very hard-working
person. I adore my work and I want to stand out in the
plumbing industry,” she says. PA
