PERSONALITY PROFILE 61 ‘I strive to stand out in the plumbing industry’ Plumbing Africa spoke to female plumber Mphela Khomutso who wants to progress as far as possible in the industry. “My responsibilities as a plumber include the installation of pipes and geysers, planning the layout of drains, repairing existing pipes and geysers, and maintenance,” says Khomutso. About her future goals Khomutso says, “I see myself becoming a successful businesswoman in plumbing. I want to become a plumbing master and I want to serve my customers with pride.” She says that she started her journey in this field in 2011 when she joined a learnership programme. “I found plumbing to be very interesting. When the programme ended in March 2012, the Department of Public Works sent us to Capricorn FET College, where I studied and obtained my N2 certificate in civil engineering. “My work philosophy is that I provide good service to my customers, as service is the most important aspect of my business.” “Public Works then took us back into the department, where we embarked on the apprenticeship programme and I finally qualified as an artisan plumber.” In terms of further qualifications, Khomutso also has a completed FET college trade test certificate, which she obtained at Indlela College. “Being a plumber is a very interesting job. You get to save water from leaking pipes and you help to improve people’s lives by providing clean sanitation for all,” she says. “I am eager to learn more about plumbing. We all know that plumbing materials are changing often, and we have to keep up with the trends. I am a very hard-working person.
