SANS 10400 : P Drainage falls under NRCS , who enforces this standard through the Building Control ( BC0 ) SANS 10252:1 & 2 and SANS 10254 Dept of Water & Sanitation – no enforcement as BCO does not inspect water supply SANS 151 NRCS who enforces this standard through BCO
For showerheads there is no standard , therefore usage cannot be controlled .
A video , https :// youtu . be / adWlWzGEsVI explains more about the identification of an efficient showerhead .
Simply put , he stated that a geyser incorrectly installed can cause serious harm .
The main standards that are misaligned are : Nine standards for taps and mixers , namely SANS , 226 , 1021 , 1480 , 1808 sections 09 , 16 , 34 , 35 . 37 , and 66 .
SANS 198 for pressure control valves and the study showed a uniform flow rate is achievable based on the tests conducted .
The wrap-up of Herman ’ s presentation was that the work has commenced . Tap standards are currently under review . In addition , a project has been opened to compile a shower head standard . Furthermore , we are awaiting confirmation of the review of the installation standards .
SABS participated in the drafting of ISO 316 “ Water efficiency labelling programmes – requirements with guidance for implementation ”, this paves the way for a WELS in SA .
Current SANS standards are not aligned with international standards , which limits the scope of available products in SA and which also prevents efficient products from being sold and there are technical barriers to trade .
Two CLASP reports were referred to , namely – South African Tap and Flow rate gap analysis ( January 2022 ) and the South African Shower heads ( October 2022 ) testing report available through the links below : 1 . https :// www . clasp . ngo / updates / clasp-supports-watersolutions-in-increasingly-dry-south-africa / 2 . https :// www . clasp . ngo / research / all / south-african-showerheads-testing-report /
Various tests were conducted on a number of products which showed the effects of the different flow rates and when the proper regulator was fitted and the impact on water reduction / usage .
The point was clearly made in terms of the role of individuals in achieving such a standard :
• If one is part of any of the standards within the SABS structure , participate actively
• If one has something to offer , join the committees

Furthermore , the Dept of Water and Sanitation will introduce a Water Efficiency Labelling scheme . One can support this initiative by participating in all phases of the project as collaboration is critical in establishing a lasting change and standards have more value than one may give them credit for , but collaboration is essential to avoid the silo effect .
We have provided a summary of the presentations . No doubt copies of the full webinar will be available from SANEDI – www . sanedi . org . za . PA
