Plumbing to save
every drop
Water scarcity is a major problem in South Africa and across the
world. As a result, different water-saving methods and technologies
are being explored. Danisa Maseko was encouraged to get into the
plumbing industry to play his part in saving water.
By Dineo Phoshoko
Maseko recently took part in IOPSA’s Family Fun Run to
celebrate World Plumbing Day and won the marathon.
He explains that in preparation for the fun run, he trained
regularly for the marathon to ensure that he would be
in the best possible shape on the day — which worked,
because he won! Some of his favourite things to do
during his spare time is to go to church or watch TV.
Regarding the current state of the plumbing industry,
Maseko believes that things are changing, especially
around technology. He explains that every time new
technology is introduced, plumbers receive training
to learn about using that technology effectively in the
industry. He also believe s that unskilled plumbers are a
major problem in the industry. “l think people must stop
using unqualified plumbers,” he suggests as a way of
improving the industry.
This manager from AJC Plumbing has been in the
industry for the past 20 years and admits that it has
been a lifelong dream of his to become a plumber.
“I have always wished to be a plumber since I was
young,” Maseko says. He believes that plumbing
is extremely important in communities, especially
when it comes to safe drinking water and sanitation.
One of the misconceptions about plumbing that
Maseko clarifies is the fact that there is more to being
a plumber than dealing with blocked drains. Maseko
dreams of owning a plumbing company one day. He also
encourages anyone looking to get into the industry to be
unwavering about the trade. “To be a plumber, you need
to be serious and patient,” Maseko concludes. PA
