ADVERTORIAL: PROJECT 37 ATE gets a new pipeline Boksburg-based Alfred Teves Brake Systems (ATE) got a new pipeline without having to dig through the trenches. By Rescue Rod THE PROBLEM A 40-year-old main pipeline water supply at ATE was losing approximately 30 000 litres of water per day due to pinhole corrosion leaks in the host pipe. Rescue Rod’s Primus Line was used to rehabilitate the pipeline without obstructing traffic at the busy factory. the system is suitable for different media, as well as various pressures to suit specific jobs. The Primus Line technology has numerous benefits, including small construction pits, short rehabilitation times, and a low level of impact on the environment. The installation is possible in the most confined spaces and with minimal machine deployment. The pipeline ran from the main factory gate under the truck weighbridge for 44m, turning right at a 45-degree angle for 15m and then left at a 30-degree angle towards the factory for 16m. The traditional open trench method was not suitable for this project, as it would have resulted in water cuts indefinitely — with the added expense of a new pipeline excavation and installation times. Added to the surface-kn own challenges when exposed, the water pipeline was very close to stormwater pipelines, which added to space restrictions and confirmed that the best solution was lining with Primus Line as opposed to traditional open trenching pipe replacement. Using the Primus Line combines the flexibility and extreme lightness of the textile sheath with the strength of steel tubing. These properties are obtained by using seamless- woven Kevlar fabric and a dual-component plastic coating applied to the sheath, which is proofed against fluid egress on the inside and abrasion on the outside. THE SOLUTION Primus Line is different from other systems in the sense that the liner can be used in a pipeline with bends — allowing for quick insertion times and fast re- commissioning. The system consists of a flexible Kevlar-reinforced liner and specially developed end fittings. Primus Line is self-supporting and is not bonded to the host pipe. ADVANTAGES OF TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY Primus Line incorporates various aspects of trenchless technology. According to the Southern African Society for Trenchless Technology (SASTT), trenchless technology refers to technology for the servicing, rehabilitation, and replacement of existing, as well as the construction of new public utilities and other services underground, without digging any trenches. Trenchless technology has the following benefits: • Trenchless pipe repair methods are environmentally and economically superior to open construction. • Trenchless pipe lining helps restore hydraulic pressure and fixes underground pipes without disrupting road, rail, and shipping traffic.
