Fitting thought 1 Plumbing Africa Times are a changin’ Nearly halfway through 2017 and our market has experienced a turbulent time with rating agencies junking us — all in one week — politicians lost in their own infighting, changes in ownership for medium and large companies, and so on. It is not all bad, though, as it shows that companies are still willing to invest, although the junk status happened after the investments/ purchases were made. However, if companies were to be run according to politicians one would get nowhere — just look at state- owned enterprises. But — plumbing goes on, as the business we are in provides the network to keep clean, live in hygienic conditions, and dispose of waste. This issue sees the launch of the “Wall of fame”. While it is good to show those shocking, appalling, and dangerous installations in our other ‘wall’, it is important to display those installations that are professionally done and crafted, showing pride in workmanship. Send us your “Wall of fame” photos for publication. Our contributors share their wisdom and we continue with the National Water Resources Strategy 2 document, as with the piece on legionella. IOPSA has been active and we now reproduce the compliance table. We also acknowledge the contestants who were awarded medals at the World Plumbing Day Fun Run and Cycle Ride. Our feature project is Old Mutual Wealth where plumbers installed a water treatment plant. The President Hotel in Cape Town offers some useful water-saving ideas that they have introduced for their own water-saving initiative. We feature valves in this issue and will follow with pumps in the next issue, as the topics deserve their own space. Finally, we review the ISH 2017 trade fair held in Frankfurt, with the general feedback being that water is the major issue. Again we say, while times are changing, it provides many an opportunity for the plumbing industry to grow itself. As that great advert for Mainstay said, “You can stay as you are for the rest of your life — or you can change to Mainstay.” In this case, you can change to grow your business.
