DESIGN : DEAR MR PLUMBER
27
In the final instance it must be noted that the purpose of the deem-to-satisfy-rules were developed for the plumber as a recipe to design / install the plumbing of a house or office ablution without an engineer .
The rest of SANS Building Regulation ’ s deem-tosatisfy-rules were also intended as standard recipes where you were supposed to not need a professional design , however the ‘ rational design ’ was intended for the professional to design from ‘ first principles ’ and in compliance with the specified performance regulations , which were compulsory .
In my CPD lecture on Sanitary Drainage , I tried to base it on , and demonstrate , the ‘ Basic Principles ’, rather than concentrate on the fixed deem-to-satisfy-rules , however the training and thinking of the plumber has to follow ‘ rigid rules ’, in which case the drainage is the DTSR .
The power of drawings I have found that it is very true that a drawing is better than a thousand words , and that is why I prefer that SANS10400-P rather have an addendum with drawings with the wording .
The rational design There are several ‘ rules ’ in the DTSR not applicable to the plumber , but can be overcome with rational design by the engineer .
The gully is rigidly applied , but there are other solutions which work better , but again it must be a rational design based on engineering principles by an engineer .
There are many other rational design solutions based on engineering principles and this must not be stifled by people who do not have the engineering background and capacity . PA
