Plumbing Africa
Welcoming a new era
Taking shortcuts to success just does not work. As we have seen in
the changing of the guard with the election of new country president
Cyril Ramaphosa, subsequently sweeping clean those who have not
played by the rules, with its own subsequent consequences. be physical — when we think outside the box, other challenges suddenly
make sense. To quote Lea Smith, “The best tool you have, is knowledge.”
Read more about this in the feature on risks for maintenance plumbing
(page 50).
As we eye the positive changes in South Africa, we can expect business
confidence to rise, and look forward to infrastructure getting going again, which
means further development, which means new opportunities to explore. We continue our series on rainwater and look at quality on page 22. In
the previous issue, we published the announcement of the standard on
water and chemical storage, SANS 1731:2017, which will now take this
alternative water source to the next stage of inclusion in our systems. Our
series on legionella is coming to an end soon, and we look at the quality
issues of ozone treatment on page 29. Our project this month is the
Rosebank Fire Station, which has a rich heritage and long history dating
back to the 1930s. The original building is one of the oldest and most well
known in the area. We also continue with the subject of wastewater and
industry’s role in its production and treatment requirements (page 19).
Enter the Wall of Shame competition on page 62— you could be a winner!
All it takes is sending an email with your observations, so you have nothing
to lose. It’s fun and the winner will be published (your own opportunity to
be famous!). Another fully loaded issue of Plumbing Africa that I trust you
will enjoy reading.z
For the plumbing industry, the same is true. Compliance to standards is
essential and the consequence of not abiding to the mandatory rules is that
you have to go and correct your mistakes. But it may also result in additional
losses through time, stock, and possibly even loss of accreditation. The reality
is that with the way the world is moving with technology, mechanisation, and
change in consumption behaviour, we will most likely see more and more job
losses; however, as artisans and plumbers, the opportunities for tradespeople
will increase. The longer I have been involved in the water space, the more I
have come to understand that the plumbing industry really plays such a big
role in the world — but also in the disasters that can be created by not doing
things right.
Technology in the industry is moving so fast with new products arriving
on our doorsteps regularly, not to mention the cheap imports that seem to
continue to burn us repeatedly. As always, we value your engagement, so if you have any compliments,
complaints, or suggestions, please get in touch at [email protected]
In putting this edition together, my eyes were opened to some of the real,
on the ground challenges you all face as business owners. It also inspired
me to think laterally. The tools we need to be successful do not have to Happy plumbing! PA
