In the previous issue, we published the announcement of the standard on water and chemical storage, SANS 1731:2017, which will now take this alternative water source to the next stage of inclusion in our systems. Our series on legionella is coming to an end soon, and we look at the quality issues of ozone treatment on page 29. Our project this month is the Rosebank Fire Station, which has a rich heritage and long history dating back to the 1930s. The original building is one of the oldest and most well known in the area. Compliance to standards is essential and the consequence of not abiding to the mandatory rules is that you have to go and correct your mistakes. But it may also result in additional losses through time, stock, and possibly even loss of accreditation. The reality is that with the way the world is moving with technology, mechanisation, and change in consumption behaviour, we will most likely see more and more job losses; however, as artisans and plumbers, the opportunities for tradespeople will increase. The longer I have been involved in the water space, the more I have come to understand that the plumbing industry really plays such a big role in the world — but also in the disasters that can be created by not doing things right. Technology in the industry is moving so fast with new products arriving on our doorsteps regularly, not to mention the cheap imports that seem to continue to burn us repeatedly.
