The South African National Accreditation System( SANAS) is the only national body responsible for carrying out accreditations in respect of conformity assessment, as mandated through the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment, Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act, 2006( Act No. 19 of 2006). This includes the accreditation of the following:
• Calibration laboratories;
• Proficiency testing service providers;
• Producers of certified reference materials;
• Testing laboratories, which includes medical, veterinary, forensic, pharmaceutical, chemical and microbiological, physical and mechanical laboratories;
• Blood transfusion services;
• Verification laboratories;
• Inspection bodies;
• Certification bodies;
• B-BBEE rating agencies; and
• Any other type of body that may be added to SANAS’ s scope of activity. SANAS is also recognised as the national body to monitor Good Laboratory Practice( GLP) / Good Clinical Practice( GCP) compliance with the principles adopted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development( OECD) for GLP facilities, or the International Co-operation on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Veterinary Medicinal Products( VICH) principles of GCP. Accreditation means third-party attestation related to conformity assessment bodies conveying formal demonstration of their competence to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks. PA
