The South African National Accreditation System ( SANAS ) is the only national body responsible for carrying out accreditations in respect of conformity assessment , as mandated through the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment , Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act , 2006 ( Act No . 19 of 2006 ). This includes the accreditation of the following :
• Calibration laboratories ;
• Proficiency testing service providers ;
• Producers of certified reference materials ;
• Testing laboratories , which includes medical , veterinary , forensic , pharmaceutical , chemical and microbiological , physical and mechanical laboratories ;
• Blood transfusion services ;
• Verification laboratories ;
• Inspection bodies ;
• Certification bodies ;
• B-BBEE rating agencies ; and
• Any other type of body that may be added to SANAS ’ s scope of activity . SANAS is also recognised as the national body to monitor Good Laboratory Practice ( GLP ) / Good Clinical Practice ( GCP ) compliance with the principles adopted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development ( OECD ) for GLP facilities , or the International Co-operation on Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Registration of Veterinary Medicinal Products ( VICH ) principles of GCP . Accreditation means third-party attestation related to conformity assessment bodies conveying formal demonstration of their competence to carry out specific conformity assessment tasks . PA
