Plumbing Africa
Is it , or isn ’ t it ?
This rather obscure headline reflects much of the content in this issue . It is good content with a probing nature , with our role players in industry creating more questions than answers .
This in itself is not a bad thing , but when the South African Institution of Civil Engineering CEO raised the thorny issue of imported engineers , we went out to industry leaders for their comments . Local engineers are unable to find jobs while being suitably qualified and the country does have exchange arrangements with other countries , but where is the balance ? Surely , our local engineers must take precedence over exchange programmes , or does exchange mean that we are sending our engineers to these countries as part of the programme ? It would be a great opportunity for our youngsters . But , as government is the worst communicator around , we never hear about it . The Department of Water and Sanitation never refers to an exchange programme when questioned about bringing in the likes of Cubans and Italians , but respond thus , “ there are no engineers in South Africa willing to work for the department .” Really ?
We will continue tackling this issue as it affects three of our group ’ s publications , namely , Plumbing Africa , Civil Engineering Contractor and Water , Sewage & Effluent . moved to Water , Sewage & Effluent where his contribution is more relevant .
Remember , we are in the water space and although the plumber ’ s work is at the end of the water road , its function is the most critical because good plumbing by qualified plumbers saves water . So continue being proud plumbers . PA
